Connecting the Dots + Season 1 Wrap-Up: Emerge and Evolve, Episode 10

1024 576 David DeWolf

For the final episode of season 1 of Emerge and Evolve, we look back at some of the common threads and leadership themes that we heard from a number of guests over the course of the season. Among those recurring themes that we identified as being vitally important for the evolving leader are:

  • Focusing on People. Effective leaders truly care about investing in and developing the individuals and teams that they lead. They don’t see them as cogs in the machine, or assets that can be easily replaced.
  • Humility. As I recount from the leadership classic Good to Great, the difference between level 4 and level 5 leaders is humility. The best leaders know that it’s not all about them, and they think and act accordingly.
  • Being coachable. It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have all the answers or don’t need any help when you’re put in a position of leadership. For leaders to continually evolve, however, they must also be willing to look inward, find ways to get feedback, and work on their own weaknesses. This goes hand-in-hand with humility and is a must if you want to make continuous improvement both as a leader and as a company.

I also take a few minutes to look into my crystal ball to try to see where I’ll be in 5 years. The answer? Hopefully in very much the same place, just with both myself and the companies I’m involved with having evolved to reach even higher peaks.

If you’ve made it this far, thanks very much for reading, watching, and listening, and stay tuned for season 2!
